WINDING STAIR
Le Flore County - Ouachita National Forest
June 22, 1934: "A fire tower on Winding Stair mountain at the head of Sycamore creek will be erected in the fall as an additional protection for the new lands acquired by the federal government in enlarging the Kiamachi national forest a division of the Ouachita national forest." (The Paris News - Texas)
November 15, 1935: "A skeleton force of about 75 members of the forestry forces from Stapp CCC camp is expected within the next few days to be located at the Holsum Valley camp 15 miles northeast of Talihina in the Kiamichi national forest.
Company 2820 was ordered disbanded a few weeks ago, and abandoned the camp. These orders came as a surprise because of the amount of unfinished work. A 40-foot fire tower had been constructed on the highest point of Winding Stair mountain and the sky-line drive, never finished at any fixed grade, was being widened to 16 feet. A park and picnic ground were being cleared around the old lookout tree and the caves on the north side of the mountain." (The Paris News - Texas)
November 28, 1957: "Carl Kannady, Cecil Leachman and Harlan Hickman alternately work at Winding Stair Fire Tower, will experience the convenience of modern living this weekend. Installation of a butane gas system and vented gas heater at the tower is being done by the Hodgen Butane Company of Hodgen. Up until now this tower has been heated with a small kerosene stove."
