SYCAMORE

June 22, 1934: "A fire tower on Winding Stair mountain at the head of Sycamore creek will be erected in the fall as an additional protection for the new lands acquired by the federal government in enlarging the Kiamachi national forest, a division of the Ouachita national forest." October 4, 1936: "A 33-foot steel fire tower will be erected on the highest peak of Winding Stair mountain to take the place of the 28-foot wood tower now in use, work on the project to start early in October, according to Ranger H.B. Donaldson of the Kiamichi division of the Ouachita national forest.
The tower is known as the Sycamore tower and is located over the federal triangulation station which has an altitude of 2,428 feet. Tom Doyle of Summerfield and Sebe Johnson of Whitesboro are the tower guards stationed there. The steel towers are permanent and standard throughout the federal forests." (The Daily Oklahoman)
