SAND ISLAND
Wisconsin - Portage County - Conservation Department - District 11
May 13, 1932: "The towers already completed are: Sand Island in district 11." (The Post-Crescent)
October 6, 1967: "Portage County's one and only fire tower is coming down.
The Division of Conservation is dismantling the Sand Island tower in the Town of Grant, in the southwest part of the county.
Put up 35 years ago, it had been unused the last five years, partly because of budget restrictions and partly because the Griffith Nursery tower near Wisconsin Rapids and the Dyracuse tower in Adams County give fairly good coverage in this area.
Sand Island tower was 85 feet high, and Stevens Point, better than 15 miles away, was easily visible. On a clear day, with binoculars, Rib Mountain near Wausau could be seen.
One of the men helping take the tower down is Ralph Keck of Tomahawk. Back in the 1930's, when the tower was being put up, Keck helped erect it.
Plans for the tower are uncertain -- it may be put up again in some other part of the state." (Stevens Point Journal)
