JONES DAM (NETTLETON)
Wisconsin - Forest County - Chequamegon - Nicolet National Forest
June 30, 1938: "Forest Supervisor Warren T. Murphy of the Nicolet national forest announced today that steps are being taken to change the name of the Jones Dam lookout tower. The named proposed is that of "Nettleton tower," and will serve to commemorate the services of Junior Forester Royal M. Nettleton, who met his death while engaged in preparing fire detection maps to be used at the Jones Dam lookout tower.
Junior Forester Nettleton died Nov. 28, 1937, as the result of a gunshot would inflicted by Vernon Cox of Long Lake, who shot Nettleton while hunting. At the time Nettleton was shot he was up in an aspen tree endeavoring to get a bearing on the Jones Dam tower. Cox yesterday was acquitted by a Forest county circuit court jury of manslaughter charges in connection with the fatal shooting.
The tower selected to bear Mr. Nettleton's name is the newest and most modern of the 16 fire lookout towers on the Nicolet forest. The tower is 120 feet tall and is equipped with a stairway, thus enabling visitors to obtain an unsurpassed view of the northern portion of the Nicolet national forest. The tower is located about 15 miles north of Argonne, and is one and a half miles west of Highway 55" (The Rhinelander Daily News)
