May 24, 1949: "More efficiency in fighting forest fires in this area will be possible shortly when a radio network is established by the ranger station in Rhinelander.
Hub of the network will be the master radio set in the ranger station. But the controls for the radio hookup will be housed in the cabin of a new fire tower. The radio operator then will be in contact with the conservation department's pick-up trucks in Rhinelander and at Merrill and Tomahawk. Eventually additional sets will be installed in other fire towers in the district.
Rhinelander's new fire tower will be located three miles east of the city between Highway 8 and Lake Thompson. Construction on a quarter-mile of road, which will serve the tower, is expected to begin next week. The tower itself is planned to be completed by the end of June and will be 120 feet in height. The control-cabin will be built at the base of the tower, and the antenna will be hooked atop the tower's cab." (The Rhinelander Daily News)
