March 12, 1936: "Construction work has started on the fourth lookout tower in the Pondfork forest unit. Site of the new tower, to be known as the Saunders tower, is located three miles south of Chadwick on the old Springdale ranch. The other three towers are at Swan, Hercules and Caney." April 9, 1936: "Saunders lookout tower, the fourth tower to be constructed in Pondfork forest purchase unit, is now under construction near Chadwick. A camp has been established at the tower for CCC boys working there." (The Douglas County Herald)
March 25, 1937: "Although the Saunders Fire Tower was erected last spring, it was not until last December that a telephone line connecting it with Swan Tower was completed." (Christian County Republican)
