LOUISIANA LOOKOUTS
SPRINGVILLE
Livingston Parish
September 5, 1974: "As if forest fires were not enough, the forestry agency suffered its biggest loss of the week from another type of fire. In Livingston Parish, the commission's Springville fire tower was destroyed when a telephone pole fell down and shorted out the line, setting the tower on fire. The towerman, Colyear Zeigler, was able to scamper down the escape uninjured but the tower burned, along with tower instruments and a two-way radio set.
Two youths were apprehended in Tangipahoa Parish and charged with arson. According to chief enforcement agent V.E. Smith, both juveniles confessed, saying that they 'just wanted to see the woods burn.' " (Lake Charles American-Press)
