July 11, 1940: "Number six and seven crews of CCC Co. 2728 are working on the High Pointe Trail, preparing the ground for the construction of the High Pointe Lookout Tower and Towerman's Cottage. The tower site is ten miles south of Richwoods, Mo., on the highest hill in that vicinity, known as High Pointe. The tower will be constructed under the supervision of Wm. Towell, District Forester.
This will be the third fire lookout tower in this district, and will be identical with the Meramec Park and Leasburg towers. Twenty-two miles of telephone wire will be strung from High Pointe to the CCC camp, in order that the Towerman can report all fires to the Forestry Office. The cottage will be built on the same plan as that one at Leasburg.
These towers are invaluable in discovering forest fires in this district, in being able to discover and report them before they grow uncontrollable." (St. Clair Chronicle)
