FRIENDSHIP MOUND
Wisconsin - Adams County
November 19, 1926: "Use of the high outjuttings of rock near Friendship and Necedah, and else where in Adams and Juneau counties, for fire towers in the new state fire district authorized for central Wisconsin, is being considered by Elmer S. Hall, conservation commissioner, according to an Associated Press report from Madison.
'By placing the observation lookouts on these rock towers a watchman can survey the country for miles around,' Mr. Hall said. 'A suitable means for the watchman to reach the top of the rock will be provided and the natural towers will be more stable and efficient than the steel towers built by man.'
A plan of organization mapped out by the county boards of Adams and Juneau counties has been approved by Mr. Hall, according to the report, and equipment will be installed sometime in the spring. Southern Wood county and southwestern Portage county were originally to be included in the Adams and Juneau district, but no definite word has been forthcoming concerning plans for these two counties." December 12, 1931: "Construction of a network of private telephone lines connecting practically every part of the 11th district of the forest fire protection branch of the Wisconsin conservation commission and the erection of four watch towers in the district is rapidly nearing completion, according to F. G. Wilson, area fire warden, who is working out of here in supervision of the construction activities.
The towers are to be located at Friendship; Quincy Bluff, southwest of Friendship; Camp Douglas and Cranberry Rock." (The Daily Tribune)
