March 30, 1944: "Miss Beatrice Collins, the 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Collins of Calvin has been appointed 'Lookout A' for the Sparta fire tower in the Kisatchie National Forest five miles northwest of Calvin. She is the first woman or girl in Louisiana to receive such an appointment from the Federal government. Her position is under United States civil service.
The duties of a fire tower lookout are rather strenuous. The lookout in a fire tower must climb to the crowsnest, 100 feet above the ground and while on duty must be on the alert for forest fires and other unusual happenings in the area while on duty. Her father for several years was lookout on the Sparta tower, but recently was promoted agriculture aid by the U.S. Forestry Service." (The Town Talk)
