October 20, 1948: "A 100 foot forest fire lookout tower in Ouachita parish went under construction yesterday and another is scheduled to begin next month, according to L.A. Rowland, who heads the Louisiana forest commission's fifth district.
The tower now under construction is a replacement of the old wooden constructed tower near Fairbanks. It will be built of heavy gauge, galvanized steel and constructed on a concrete foundation.
The old tower now in Fairbanks has been condemned as unsafe. Built in 1920, it has been in use in two locations prior to erection at Fairbanks, and reaches only 87 feet. When the new tower is completed the old one will be taken down and built into truck beds to be mounted on fire fighting trucks.
Serving as lookout man will be Luther E. Lusby who was recently employed by the forestry commission to attend the tower. He will relieve Willie V. Aulds who is an assistant ranger serving as tower man when needed." (The Monroe News-Star)
