SAND RIDGE STATE FOREST
Illinois - Mason County
June 26, 1939: "Construction of a $2000 100-foot wooden fire tower as an experiment at the Mason county state forest, will be started within ten days Anton J. Tomasek, chief forester of the department of conservation, announced today.
Tomasek said the tower would be the only one of such construction in central Illinois and was being built to test the advisability of the cheaper wooden towers.
The tower will overlook an area of 100 square miles and will help solve the fire problems of the district by enabling immediate spotting of such fires, Tomasek said.
The work will be done by CCC labor." (Freeport Journal-Standard)
